(Since it nearly the beginning of new sem. So, why not heat up our brain with some medical stuffs.)
Salam ...
Me was 'melekat pada doktor' last week. Ok, I know that sounds weird but that is the meaning of 'attachment' literally and practically ... as from my experience. I didn't expect to do this attachment during my holiday here in Malaysia. At least, not during my pre-clinical year. But, praise to Allah that gave me this chance to expose myself to the real world of being a doctor. Or should I say a muslim doctor ...
Ever heard of Dr Musa Mohd Nordin? Okay, if u don't just google his name. Actually he is my father's friend ; junior of him during secondary school and in UK. Btw, he is a neonatologist. So, my father offered me one day back in June that I may get a chance to do an attachment with him. I don't know whether to agree or not. But last week I came to see him in his clinic at Damansara Specialist Hospital to do this so called attachment. As I said earlier that it's not really an attachment but more of me to gain some experineces. So here I'll just list down what I observed during it.
Among cases that I met ;
1/ A hypoglyacemic baby who was born premature by c-sect. His/her condition will affect the brain as glucose gives energy and energy is needed to do normal function of the body. As the brain masters all the acts. So, the baby was given extra glucose. The doctor took the baby's blood tru the veins from the dorsum of the hand for estimation of the blood glucose. A quite complicated procedure.
2/ A baby born with some kind of polyps inside .... (not sure). Gone through operation to excise it. Maybe I'll found out later during my paediatric rotation (setahun lg kot)
3/ Heard a murmur of one boy maybe 2-3 years old who got a condition called dextrocardia. Yup, his heart is at the right side. But only the heart not the other GIT organs. Surprisingly, he got only single atrium and ventricle. Pity him. But his condition is quite well actually and is recovering (or adapting to his heart).
4/ Also another boy with nearly the same age who got Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Be tough boy!
5/ A baby with strawberry naevi which is actually a capillary haemangioma. Something related with the vessels.
6/ A nephrotic syndrome baby. He/she got swelling head (edema)
7/ Go to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and see lots of babies either premature or with jaundice undergo treatment with that incubator thing. There is also treatment by photoisomerisation, something related to the small molecule and physics ... which I dislike ;p
8/ Other common cases for babies and children ; colic, asthma, food poisoning (stomach flu?), fever etc
9/ Some info about body temperature for babies and children I think - if we measure the temp tru the ear (internal temp), the normal range is between 36.5 - 38 degree and if from armpit (external temp) then it would be from 36 - 37.5 degree.
10/ Last but not least, love to see the babies and children got their injection for immunization. One time they are calm,once the neddle stabbed their thigh ... haha, you knew lah what happened. Wonder how my 'anak2 sedara' punye reactions ...
Owh, also got a chance to see a live c-sect in the OT. That was an amazing experience surely with the blue uniform, mask and head cover. ABC - first steps to approach the newborn or any emergency cases as A for airway, B for breathing and C for circulation.
Before leave, had some conversations with Dr Musa. Inspiring thoughts and advices that surely boost me to excel in this field. Insya Allah ... pray for my new semester in the 3rd year.
